Previz - New VFX short

(Cellblocks "Clay" render + lighting)

I started building this subterranean prison 2 - 3 weeks ago in Cinema 4D. It's basically one cell and the immediate landing + railing below and lighting + industrial minutiae above cloned in columns and rows, then pitched along 2, 45 degree angles to create the appearance of a hexagonal pit.

(Lift + Lift towers)

The bulk of the action is supposed to take place on this elevator platform, flanked by large guard/ towers.

(Closer look at the lift)

The idea for the prison is an authoritarian nightmare: 12 sub levels housing convicted killers. The lift is meant to be a slow, demoralizing ride in and -- for the condemned -- a slow ride up to execution. As an added means of control, the ventilation system contains a sedative meant to quell inmate violence. Of course, that'll be exploited in the short story...

(Holding cell)

The lowest levels would be used for administration, medical, and inmate processing. These lower levels are not subject to the sedative agent. The image above shows the holding cell where the lift would come to rest. Above it, two large doors open/close.

So what's the idea?

I wanted to do something fun and over-the-top: Escape From New York, Dredd, and Assault On Precinct 13 vibes.

A wrongfully-condemned man is sentenced to be executed, but a full-scale prison riot erupts when something goes wrong with the sedative aerosol causing mania and rage.

Our condemned anti-hero must fight off the raging psychos who climb onto the lift and threaten his escape.

Something like that...

Lots of work ahead, but these early renders help plot the course forward.
